Jeff Sharp, a detective with the Seattle Police Department, spent years encountering addicts and questioning why they continued to use drugs. However, his perspective on addiction changed dramatically after his daughter, Bailey, was involved in a murder plot in California. Bailey, who struggled with various health issues, turned to drugs and eventually heroin, leading to a spiraling drug problem.
In 2016, Bailey became involved with former Navy sailor Jared Bischoff, who was driven by jealousy and rage to conspire to kill his ex-wife and her new partner. Bailey agreed to help execute the plan, motivated by her heroin addiction and the promise of a share in an insurance payout from Bischoff. The plot, however, unraveled due to Bailey’s actions, leading to her murder by Bischoff in a public park.
Bischoff and another defendant were convicted of both Bailey’s murder and the murder of the ex-wife’s partner. The case highlighted the devastating impact of addiction, as Bailey’s drug dependency ultimately led to her involvement in a violent crime.
Jeff and Ericka Sharp spoke out about their daughter’s story to raise awareness about addiction and mental health challenges, aiming to overcome the shame and stigma often associated with these issues. They emphasized the need for empathy and understanding towards individuals struggling with addiction, recognizing that it is a complex and powerful disorder that can hijack the brain. The family’s journey serves as a reminder of the destructive consequences of untreated addiction.
