Rep. Nancy Mace, the top Republican on the House Oversight Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Government Innovation, threatened to issue a subpoena to the Biden administration as she probes whether the government is trying to limit information shared on social media platforms before the November elections. Mace is seeking communications between the administration and social media companies, like Meta, regarding any attempts to manipulate content. She cited the administration’s admission of working with social media companies to flag misinformation on their platforms as evidence of their willingness to interfere with social media. Conservatives have accused the administration of pressuring companies like Meta and Twitter to take down content that didn’t serve their political agenda, but the Supreme Court found no illegal behavior in the administration’s actions.
Mace also pointed to an example from the Federal Communications Commission’s top Republican as a possible attempt by the administration to suppress content. The new letter from Mace requests documents from the White House related to any discussions of concealing or suppressing information on social media platforms. Rep. Gerry Connolly, the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, dismissed the subpoena threat as an overreaction and suggested that the real problem lies with Republicans. The White House has not yet responded to the request for comment.
