First Meeting Held by New Mexico’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Task Force – Reported by KRQE News 13

The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Task Force in New Mexico recently held its first meeting to address the epidemic of violence and disappearances affecting Indigenous communities. The task force was established by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham in response to the disproportionate number of Native Americans who go missing or are murdered in the state.

During the meeting, members of the task force discussed the need for a comprehensive database to track cases of missing and murdered Indigenous people, as well as the importance of collaborating with tribal communities and law enforcement agencies. They also emphasized the need for culturally sensitive strategies to address the root causes of violence and improve communication between agencies.

According to data from the New Mexico Department of Public Safety, Native Americans make up 11% of the state’s population but account for 30% of missing persons cases. The task force aims to address this disparity and provide better support and resources for Indigenous families seeking justice for their loved ones.

Task force member and Navajo Nation Attorney General Doreen McPaul stressed the importance of acknowledging the historical trauma and systemic issues that contribute to violence against Indigenous people. She stated that the task force’s work is critical in bringing awareness to these issues and advocating for policy changes to better protect Native communities.

Moving forward, the task force plans to work closely with tribal leaders, law enforcement agencies, and advocacy groups to develop a comprehensive plan for addressing the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous peoples in New Mexico. By working together, they hope to bring justice and closure to the families affected by these tragedies.
