A Chinese hacking campaign targeted the phones of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, his running mate Sen. JD Vance, Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s staff. It is unclear if any communications were stolen. The FBI and CISA are investigating the unauthorized access to U.S. telecommunications infrastructure by Chinese actors. AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies were reportedly hacked, with Verizon confirming the incident. The Chinese embassy denied knowledge of the situation and stated it has no intention to interfere in U.S. elections. While the U.S. accuses Iran and Russia of attempting to influence the election, China’s hacking efforts do not appear to be related to the 2024 presidential race. The ODNI has previously stated that China does not seek to influence the election, but it is unclear if that assessment still stands. NBC News reporters Kevin Collier, Ken Dilanian, and Tom Winter covered the story, with contributions from Brian Cheung.
