Clovis High School’s marching band recently placed fourth in a field of 18 Class 5A marching bands at the first New Mexico Activities Association marching band contest in the 5A division. Despite the early morning start and long bus ride to Rio Rancho, band director Daniel Perez praised the band for their resilience and grit.
Host school Rio Rancho took first place in the division, with Clovis coming in fourth overall. The event marked a shift in the state’s marching band competitions, as the NMAA contest will now serve as the benchmark for top bands in the state.
Looking ahead, the Clovis High School marching band will travel to Utah for the Bands of America Regional competition on November 9. Perez expressed excitement for the opportunity to compete on a national stage alongside bands from Utah, Texas, Colorado, California, and of course New Mexico.
Perez highlighted the band’s improved performance at the recent competition, noting that it was their best of the season so far. With their impressive showing in Rio Rancho, the Clovis High School marching band continues to demonstrate their talent and dedication as they prepare for future competitions.
