Former President Donald Trump will hold a rally in Albuquerque this week as part of his 2024 election campaign cycle. Trump and Vice Presidential nominee J.D. Vance (R-OH) announced the rally at CSI Aviation Inc. The statement criticized Vice President Kamala Harris’ policies, stating they have caused havoc in New Mexico households. The rally will be Trump’s first campaign event in New Mexico since 2019.
The rally comes as Trump and Harris are in a statistical tie nationally and are scheduled to campaign in other states. Trump hopes to make inroads in traditionally Democratic-leaning constituencies.
Despite his past poor performance in New Mexico, Trump’s campaign periodically considers the state to be in play. Down-ballot Republicans in New Mexico have also struggled in recent elections. Some Republican candidates, such as Sharon Clahchischilliage and Yvette Herrell, will appear alongside Trump at the rally.
The rally has caused a mixed reaction among New Mexico politicians. While some are glad to see Trump rally his supporters in the state, others, including the Heinrich campaign, view the rally as a desperate attempt to gain support. The Democratic Party of New Mexico also dismissed Trump’s visit, stating that his priorities are not aligned with those of most New Mexicans.
The rally comes at a critical time as early voting is underway in New Mexico and across the nation. Trump’s campaign hopes to boost Republican turnout in competitive races and make an impact in traditionally Democratic strongholds like New Mexico.
