Following deadly flooding that hit Roswell, New Mexico earlier this month, state officials have requested a major disaster declaration from the federal government. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham made the request to President Joe Biden, describing the storm as “unprecedented” and highlighting the need for support for the affected residents and businesses in Chaves County.
The Oct. 18 storm resulted in two fatalities, damaged buildings, and destroyed property, prompting state and federal officials to assess the extent of the damage. If approved, the disaster declaration would unlock financial assistance from FEMA and the Small Business Administration, providing critical resources for recovery efforts.
The request for federal aid comes as local authorities continue to assess the impact of the flooding in Roswell. State emergency management officials reported over 300 water rescues, with more than 100 people seeking shelter on the rooftops of the Roswell Convention and Civic Center during the storm. The National Weather Service confirmed record rainfall of nearly 6 inches, making it the highest single weather event in Roswell’s history.
New Mexico’s Congressional delegation has also urged President Biden to promptly approve the disaster declaration to ensure timely and effective support for the affected communities. The situation is ongoing, with officials working to provide relief and aid to those impacted by the devastating flooding.
