Steve Bannon, a right-wing podcast host and former Donald Trump campaign official, was released from federal Bureau of Prisons custody after serving a four-month sentence for defying subpoenas from the House Jan. 6 committee. Bannon, who hosts a podcast called “Bannon’s War Room,” has downplayed the Jan. 6 attack and has shown allegiance to Trump over compliance with the law. Meanwhile, Trump himself faces criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Bannon, a 70-year-old white male, served his time at FCI Danbury in Connecticut.
Bannon, who had attempted to claim executive privilege to avoid testifying before the Jan. 6 committee, ultimately ended up agreeing to testify at the last minute. Despite this, he was convicted of contempt of Congress and his convictions were upheld on appeal. Another former White House official, Peter Navarro, was also convicted of contempt of Congress and served a four-month sentence before being released during the Republican National Convention.
Bannon’s release comes just one week before the 2024 election, where voters will choose between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Bannon has been a vocal supporter of Trump and has made false claims about the upcoming election. Despite his release, Bannon’s conviction and time served in prison have left a mark on his reputation.
