Chinese journalism is at a crossroads, facing both unprecedented opportunities and challenges brought about by the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. The annual conference of the Chinese Language Press Institute in Beijing highlighted the need for traditional media outlets to embrace emerging technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, big data, and generative AI in order to adapt to the changing landscape.
According to Wang Gang, deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the evolution of technology driven by AI is reshaping how information is produced, disseminated, and consumed. This presents both disruption and opportunity for traditional print media, which are facing market shrinkage and declining revenues. Wang emphasized the importance of proactive adaptation to technological changes and the development of engaging content that resonates with younger audiences online.
However, despite the potential benefits of embracing AI, a recent survey conducted by the Xinhua Institute revealed that only slightly over 50 percent of media organizations are actively exploring its application in news. Challenges such as internal resistance, outdated workflows, and talent development hinder more widespread adoption of AI in journalism.
In order to address these challenges, the report suggests combating technology with technology and establishing international industry standards to ensure the safety and reliability of information. Overall, there is a clear need for enhanced regulation and cooperation within the media industry to effectively harness the potential of AI technologies. The conference brought together leaders of Chinese-language media from home and abroad to discuss these pressing issues and explore new opportunities for innovation and efficiency in the field of journalism.
