The New Mexico Wildlife Center is mourning the loss of Hopper the Swainson’s Hawk, who had been an Ambassador Animal at NMWC since 2016. Hopper was rescued almost 9 years ago with injuries that left him non-releasable. Despite receiving a habitat upgrade and medical treatment, his quality of life was compromised due to severe visual impairment and signs of arthritis. The decision was made to put him down in a humane manner.
Hopper had spent years educating the public about Swainson’s Hawks and had built relationships with those who worked closely with him. The NMWC is grateful for his service and will miss him dearly. The center operates through the support of donors and volunteers and invites visitors to learn more about their work. Donation can be made online, and the center is open for visitation from Tuesday to Sunday. Admission fees apply for adults and children, with free entry for ages 3 and under.
