Trout are actively feeding in many New Mexico lakes

Trout fishing enthusiasts in New Mexico can look forward to a weekend of good fishing as temperatures start to warm up. In Lincoln County, anglers have been successful in catching trout at Bonito Lake using flies, lures, and worms. Corona Pond has also seen good trout fishing with earthworms, while Grindstone Lake has had slow to fair success with fly fishing.

However, Elephant Butte Lake near Truth or Consequences has not been as productive for trout, with anglers having better luck fishing for walleye and catfish. Trees Lake near Deming has been a hotspot for trout fishing using PowerBait.

In Las Cruces, Young Park Pond has had slow to fair trout fishing using PowerBait Salmon Eggs. Meanwhile, in Eastern New Mexico at Oasis Lake State Park near Portales, trout fishing has been very good with PowerBait and Pistol Pete red worm flies, although bass fishing has been slow.

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, in cooperation with Dustin Berg of gounlimited.org, will continue to provide fishing reports throughout the winter months, even though there may be fewer reports due to slower fishing activity. Anglers are reminded that conditions can change quickly, so it’s always best to check for the most up-to-date information before heading out to fish.
