Chicago school district acknowledges mistake regarding presence of ICE agents at school.

Chicago Public Schools admitted to making an error on Friday by mistakenly claiming that immigration agents had gone to a school, causing alarm among the community. The agents were actually from the U.S. Secret Service and not Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Secret Service was investigating a threat related to the recent TikTok ban and visited a home next to Hamline Elementary School before going to the school itself. The agents were not allowed into the school and left without entering.
Chicago Public Schools stated that officials followed safety protocols and contacted the appropriate departments in response to the situation. The district emphasized that they are prepared to keep students and staff safe in partnership with community organizations. This incident occurred shortly after President Donald Trump took office, raising concerns about immigration enforcement.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson clarified on social media that it was the Secret Service, not ICE, that visited the school. He reassured residents that Chicago remains a welcoming city dedicated to protecting all residents. Trump recently signed executive orders related to immigration, including declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and seeking to end birthright citizenship. Additionally, he issued an order directing departments to take action against illegal aliens at the southern border. The incident at Hamline Elementary School highlights the heightened fears and confusion surrounding immigration enforcement under the new administration.
