Bernalillo County’s animal shelter is facing a space shortage following a mold outbreak in late 2024, which led to the closure of two dozen kennels. Due to the limited capacity, the shelter has partnered with Expo New Mexico to provide temporary housing for the affected animals in one of Expo’s livestock buildings. This collaboration will allow for more training and attention for shy dogs in the future. However, with construction at the shelter expected to take at least a year, the shelter is exploring the possibility of opening an off-site adoption center to alleviate the overcrowding issue. Despite the challenges, the community has rallied together to support the shelter and ensure the well-being of the animals. As preparations for the state fair begin in June, the shelter remains hopeful for a solution to the space constraints. The collaboration between Expo New Mexico and Bernalillo County’s animal shelter demonstrates the community’s commitment to helping animals in need during challenging times.
