A recent YWCA survey sheds light on the tang ping or “lying flat” trend among Hong Kong’s youth, revealing that over 50 percent of students have neutral feelings about it. Tang ping, a lifestyle that emphasizes withdrawal from society and low desire, has become increasingly popular, with one man even embarking on a 2,100-kilometer bicycle journey to find meaning in life. The survey, conducted from September to November 2024, interviewed nearly 1,000 secondary students, showing that while many have neutral or negative feelings about tang ping, a significant portion have already adopted this mindset. Despite this, the majority view it as a temporary phase rather than a permanent lifestyle choice, offering hope for the future. The survey results provide valuable insights for decision-makers and educators on how to understand and address this growing trend among the city’s youth.
