Darren White, a former Bernalillo County sheriff and state cabinet secretary, announced his candidacy for Mayor of Albuquerque, criticizing incumbent Mayor Tim Keller’s handling of crime and homelessness. White emphasized his fiscal conservatism and plans to give law enforcement more support, as well as repeal Keller’s Sanctuary City law. He plans to use public financing for his campaign. White previously served as Chief Public Safety Officer under Mayor Richard Berry and ran for Congress in 2008. He also served as Secretary of Public Safety under Governor Gary Johnson, resigning over marijuana legalization advocacy. Despite initially opposing medical cannabis, White later ran a medical cannabis company. If elected in November, it would not be his first time working in City Hall.
