Maryland reports first measles case of 2025, while outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico continue to grow

Maryland’s first case of measles for the year was confirmed by health officials, with a resident testing positive after international travel. The Maryland Department of Health warned individuals who visited specific locations that they may have been exposed to the highly contagious disease. It was emphasized that efforts were being made to identify and contact potentially exposed individuals.

The patient’s identity and vaccination status were not disclosed, and the case was not linked to outbreaks in West Texas and New Mexico where the disease has caused fatalities and illnesses. Measles cases have been reported in 13 jurisdictions this year, with outbreaks in various states, including Alaska, California, and New York City.

Measles, which was eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, continues to be a concern due to unvaccinated individuals. Last year, there were 285 cases reported in 33 jurisdictions. Health officials urge vaccination to prevent further spread of the disease.
