DOE Identifies Santa Fe Battery Repurposing Project as Priority

A recent report has revealed a “hit list” of clean energy projects that are at risk of losing funding from the U.S. Department of Energy. Among the projects on the list is the Long-Duration Energy Storage Communities Accessing Resilient Energy Storage project, which includes Santa Fe. This project focuses on repurposing used lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles for energy storage systems.

The list of projects will be submitted to the Department of Government Efficiency and the Office of Management and Budget for review, with the possibility of cancellation. The CARES project, led by the company ReJoule, was awarded $1 million in funding for phase one, but could receive up to $10 million in total federal cost share. The project aims to support microgrids and electric storage as an alternative to fossil fuel-powered plants.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office expressed concern over potential cuts to federal funding for clean energy projects in New Mexico, emphasizing the importance of honoring commitments to invest in projects that benefit local communities.

The fate of the clean energy projects on the “hit list” remains uncertain as they await further review by government agencies. The potential impact of funding cuts on innovative projects like the CARES initiative underscores the importance of continued support for sustainable energy solutions.
