Interim President of Columbia University Resigns

Columbia University’s interim president, Katrina A. Armstrong, is stepping aside and returning to the Irving Medical Center. Claire Shipman will serve as acting president while a new president is sought. Armstrong said she is proud to have led the university during a challenging time but feels her passion lies in science and healing.

The university recently agreed to negotiate with the Trump administration to restore $400 million in federal funding, which was withheld due to accusations of inaction in addressing harassment of Jewish students. The funding was withdrawn following student protests over Israel’s war in Gaza, which led to arrests and disciplinary actions against protesting students.

One of the student activists, Mahmoud Khalil, was arrested by immigration agents over alleged ties to Hamas, a terrorist organization. Khalil is currently in federal custody in Louisiana while a legal challenge to his arrest and deportation is pending. Khalil and other students sued the university to prevent the disclosure of disciplinary records to the government.

The Trump administration’s crackdown on deportations has resulted in several international college students being detained by immigration authorities. The situation at Columbia University highlights the intersection of political activism, student protests, and government intervention on college campuses.
