Researchers presented at the American College of Cardiology annual meeting in Chicago about a new medication, lorundrostat, that may help lower blood pressure in people with uncontrolled hypertension. In a clinical trial, patients who took lorundrostat along with existing hypertension drugs saw an 8-point greater decrease in systolic blood pressure compared to those who received a placebo. This new therapy shows promise in helping individuals who struggle to control their high blood pressure.
Hypertension is a prevalent condition in the U.S., with half of adults affected and only a quarter having their blood pressure under control. Uncontrolled hypertension is associated with an increased risk of serious health issues such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.
Lorundrostat, an aldosterone synthase inhibitor, works by reducing aldosterone levels, which regulates salt retention and blood pressure. In a clinical trial, participants who received lorundrostat in addition to standard medications experienced a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure.
The inclusion of a diverse group of participants, including Black patients who are at a higher risk for hypertension, is notable in the trial. The drug showed positive results in improving blood pressure levels, with minimal side effects such as high potassium levels.
Future studies are needed to further evaluate the long-term effectiveness and safety of lorundrostat, as well as comparisons with other existing medications. The potential approval and availability of the drug in the next 12 to 18 months offer hope for patients who struggle to control their blood pressure effectively.
