Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals tied NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most career goals in league history with his 894th goal. Ovechkin scored the game-tying goal against the Chicago Blackhawks in the third period on Friday. Since being drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in 2004, Ovechkin has lived up to his promise as an offensive force, holding multiple scoring records including most power-play goals, most overtime goals, and most goals scored for a single team. In addition to his goal-scoring prowess, Ovechkin has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies as the league’s top goal scorer, most recently in 2020. He is also a three-time NHL MVP and led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
Despite the Capitals’ early playoff exits since their Stanley Cup win, they are currently leading the Eastern Conference and rank second overall in the NHL this season. Ovechkin, now 39 years old, has been playing professionally since 2001 and his contract with Washington runs through the 2025-26 season. The Russian forward’s accomplishment in tying Gretzky’s goal-scoring record cements his legacy as one of the greatest players in NHL history.
