The Infamous Women of New Mexico’s Past: Who were the ‘bad girls’ of history?

Historian Robert Tórrez recently gave a talk on the “Bad Girls of New Mexico” at Casa San Ysidro in Corrales. Casa San Ysidro, owned by the Albuquerque Museum, hosts free public events on the second Saturday of every month. Tórrez delved into the intriguing topic of crime in New Mexico, discussing infamous outlaws like Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett. He highlighted the stories of women like Paula Angel, the only woman hanged during the territorial period, and mother-daughter duo Maria Josefa and Maria Francisca, who were executed for murder. Tórrez shared that his research is based on court records and news publications from the “wild west” era, giving insight into how criminal cases were handled over the past 300 years. Admission to Casa San Ysidro is usually $4-$6, but it is free on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event attracted a lot of interest and shed light on the lesser-known criminal history of New Mexico.
