Chimpanzees from New Mexico laboratory are the last group to arrive at Chimp Haven – Minden Press-Herald

Animal welfare organizations Humane World for Animals, Humane World Action Fund, and Animal Protection New Mexico have successfully relocated the remaining chimpanzees from the Alamogordo Primate Facility in New Mexico to Chimp Haven in Louisiana. This move comes after years of advocacy and legal efforts to ensure the animals could retire in a natural and enriching environment after years of biomedical research.

The National Institutes of Health reversed its stance in November 2024, allowing the chimpanzees to be moved to Chimp Haven, as required by law. The relocation process began earlier this year, with 10 chimpanzees already settling in at the sanctuary.

Representatives from the organizations involved expressed their joy and relief at seeing the chimpanzees finally experiencing freedom and dignity. The chimps are reported to be doing well at Chimp Haven, forming social bonds and exhibiting species-typical behaviors.

This successful relocation is a testament to the power of dedicated advocacy and marks a historic victory for animal welfare. The chimpanzees can now enjoy their remaining years in a safe and comfortable environment.
