Rescued U.S. pastor in South Africa after intense shootout

American pastor Josh Sullivan was rescued in a high-stakes shootout in South Africa after being kidnapped at gunpoint last week. Sullivan, who was leading a prayer service at his congregation in Motherwell, was abducted by armed men. He was living in South Africa with his wife and children since 2018. He was found near a safe house in Gqeberha, around 14 miles away from Motherwell in a successful rescue operation by the Hawks branch of the South African Police Service. Three suspects were fatally wounded in the shootout, but Sullivan was miraculously unharmed and is in excellent condition. His mother expressed gratitude for his safe return on social media.

Sullivan’s church, Fellowship Baptist Church, had asked for prayers following his kidnapping. The church faced backlash and hateful messages regarding its missionaries. South African police have continued their investigation into Sullivan’s abduction and have asked for any information about the case. They expressed their appreciation for the support of law enforcement, the public, international partners, and the media in the success of Sullivan’s rescue. Sullivan’s mother described him as an exceptional father, husband, and son with kindness, strength, and generosity, and thanked the Lord for his safe return.
