Old Barrel Tea Company in New Mexico found success with the help of the New Mexico Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). Paola Huffmon, one of the co-owners, realized the challenges and expenses of manufacturing tea blends in 2018, but the support from MEP contributed to the company’s growth.
President Trump’s administration initially decided not to renew contracts for federal funding to MEPs, including the one in New Mexico. However, funding was restored after U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez advocated for it, emphasizing the importance of MEP in supporting New Mexican manufacturers and the economy.
MEP CEO Jennifer Sinsabaugh highlighted the range of services provided with federal funding, including training, robotics, and engineering support for manufacturers in the state. Without federal assistance, MEP’s ability to support businesses, especially in rural areas, would have been severely limited.
Old Barrel Tea Company benefited from MEP’s assistance, including hiring a safety consultant for an FDA audit and using 3D printers for product design improvements. Huffmon credits MEP for helping the company expand and release new products successfully.
Sinsabaugh urged people to support MEP by contacting elected officials and emphasizing the program’s importance. At a time when federal funding for MEPs is uncertain, continued support is crucial for the success of businesses like Old Barrel Tea Company in New Mexico.
