Groundbreaking for First Community Solar Project on State Lands

The first community solar project on state trust lands in New Mexico, the Global Give A Book Community Solar Project, broke ground in Los Lunas. This project is one of eight planned on state lands to increase renewable energy capacity. Developed by Affordable Solar, the project allows utility customers to subscribe for five-megawatt solar arrays. With 49 community solar projects in progress statewide, Affordable Solar is working on seven, including three on state trust land. State Land Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard highlighted the benefits of community solar, such as keeping electricity production local. The projects also help fund schools, universities, and hospitals and can coexist with agriculture on leased state trust lands. The Global Give A Book project will generate $2.7 million for these institutions over the lease’s life. Located near an elementary school, Affordable Solar plans to give tours to students to educate them on renewable energy. The project is a step towards solving challenges communities face in accessing affordable, sustainable energy. The location of community solar projects on state lands is part of the State Land Office’s approach to problem-solving and supporting communities in New Mexico.
