Report on NMSU basketball hazing scandal released by NMDOJ

A hazing scandal involving the New Mexico State University men’s basketball team has led to the release of a report by the New Mexico Department of Justice. The report accuses players Deshawndre Washington, Kim Aiken Jr., and Doctor Bradley of sexually harassing and assaulting their teammates and student managers during the 2022-2023 season.

As a result of the scandal, NMSU cancelled the last six games of the season and fired head coach Greg Heiar. The report detailed a toxic culture within the basketball program, with a lackadaisical attitude towards player discipline and a failure to address violent incidents.

In response to the report, NMSU has already taken steps to improve the situation by implementing anti-hazing training for student-athletes and senior leadership taking a more direct approach in reporting incidents. The report also includes recommendations for the university to strengthen safeguards and policies to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

Several lawsuits have been filed against the university over the scandal, with two players, Aiken and Bradley, already taking plea deals for their involvement. The university has settled two lawsuits for a combined $8 million and is currently reviewing the report and its recommendations.

New Mexico State University has expressed its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students and is dedicated to implementing the necessary measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
