Fernando Lovo Appointed as University of New Mexico’s Athletic Director
November 24, 2023 — The University of New Mexico (UNM) has announced the appointment of Fernando Lovo as its new vice president for athletics. Currently serving as a senior associate athletics director at the University of Texas, Lovo brings extensive experience in football operations and overseeing substantial capital projects valued at over half a billion dollars.
Lovo’s journey is rooted deeply in family legacy; his paternal grandfather’s crest bears the name "Lobo," stemming from family origins in Nicaragua. He will be taking over the position previously held by Eddie Nuñez, who departed for the University of Houston in August. Lovo is expected to start on December 1, with an initial five-year contract and a base salary of $400,000, potentially rising to $500,000 with performance incentives.
UNM President Garnett S. Stokes expressed enthusiasm for Lovo’s leadership, emphasizing his dynamic capability and commitment to student-athletes. Having worked closely with notable coaches like Urban Meyer and Tom Herman, Lovo is well-versed in navigating the collegiate athletics landscape. He cites his personal connection to New Mexico, inspired by mentorship from Texas AD Chris Del Conte, as a significant factor in his decision to take the position.
Taking on the challenges facing UNM athletics, including limited financial resources and a recent history of lackluster football performance, Lovo expressed optimism about the program’s prospects under new head coach Bronco Mendenhall. Lovo believes in leveraging success in football to elevate other sports, particularly the storied Lobo basketball program, known for its passionate fan base.
Eager to immerse himself in the New Mexico community, Lovo intends to foster collaboration and continue the legacy of success established at UNM.
