New Mexico United Secures Victory Against Union Omaha

In an impressive display of defensive prowess, New Mexico United shut out reigning USL League One champions Union Omaha with a 2-0 victory at Rio Grande Credit Union Field on Saturday night, drawing a crowd of 9,495 fans. The match marked United’s inaugural Jägermeister Cup contest.

The first half was tightly contested, with both teams managing just one shot on target and a combined xG of 0.03 until the 42nd minute. United’s breakthrough came when Marlon Vargas was fouled in the box, prompting captain Talen Maples to convert the ensuing penalty, giving United a crucial 1-0 lead just before halftime.

The second half showcased a marked shift in momentum. With United pushing aggressively, they achieved a season-high 3.77 xG, totaling 18 shots, 12 of which were on target. Despite several attempts thwarted by Union Omaha’s goalkeeper Rashid Nuhu, Vargas sealed the victory in stoppage time, netting the second goal with a well-placed shot from a Mukwelle Akale assist.

This victory adds another clean sheet to United’s impressive streak as they continue to build on their successful season.
