Spartans Triumph Over New Mexico in High-Scoring Finale
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The San José State baseball team secured an exhilarating 14-12 victory over New Mexico in the final game of their three-game series on Sunday at Santa Ana Star Field. Jeriah Lewis and Zach Chamizo shone offensively, each going 3-for-6 with four RBIs, boosting the Spartans’ record to 21-23 and 9-12 in Mountain West play.
Despite challenging 17-31 mph winds, the Spartans racked up 16 hits, with standout performances from Rocco Caballero, Zach Tallerman, and Alex Fernandes. San José State scored in four innings, notably a four-run second and a three-run seventh, effectively countering New Mexico’s late rally.
On the mound, Nolan George pitched 4.2 innings before handing off to the bullpen. EJ McGrew (6-1) claimed the win after navigating tough middle innings, while Tyler Albanese secured his sixth save, striking out four batters in two strong frames.
Chamizo extended his on-base streak to 12 games, while Lewis’s three hits included a double, triple, and a team-leading eighth home run. The Spartans will return home to face Cal at Excite Ballpark on April 30 at 6:05 p.m., available for viewing on the Mountain West Network.
