New Mexico History Museum Unveils Digitized Collection of Karl Kernberger Photographs

SANTA FE — The New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) is excited to announce the launch of the digitized Karl Kernberger Photograph Collection, now available for online browsing. This initiative enhances accessibility to Kernberger’s work, which highlights outdoor recreation, ghost towns, and various cultural events across the Southwest.

Curator Hannah Abelbeck noted, “We aimed to provide access to a significant collection that previously lacked digital visibility. The uploaded contact sheets reveal a diverse array of subjects, including unexpected themes like prison conditions.” Kernberger, an award-winning photographer (1938-1997), documented critical social and environmental issues and collaborated on books such as Ghost Towns of New Mexico and Wild Rivers of North America.

This project was supported by a grant from the New Mexico Historical Records Advisory Board, allowing for the digitization of approximately 24,000 negatives, 1,625 contact sheets, and more. Project archivist Hall Frost will present “Out There Adventure: The Photographs of Karl Kernberger” on May 16, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
