Amazon Explores Listing Tariff Charges on Discount Haul Site — White House Deems Idea ‘Hostile’

On Tuesday, Amazon considered listing tariff charges on its discount platform, Amazon Haul, aimed at competing with low-cost competitors like Temu and Shein. However, a company spokesperson clarified that this idea was never approved and will not be implemented. The spokesperson emphasized that displaying tariff charges would not occur on Amazon’s main site or any of its properties.

This discussion was sparked by a report from Punchbowl News, which claimed Amazon intended to show how the Trump administration’s tariffs are influencing product prices. In response to the report, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized Amazon’s consideration as a “hostile and political act.” She made the statement during a briefing, accompanied by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, highlighting the significant impact of tariffs on online retail prices, particularly for companies that rely heavily on imports from China.

While online retailers face increasing visibility concerning price hikes due to tariffs, other companies like Temu have already begun imposing substantial import charges. The situation remains sensitive; Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and majority owner, has worked to cultivate relationships with the current administration. Notably, Bezos attended President Trump’s inauguration and Amazon’s video platform has featured a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump.

When pressed on the nature of the relationship between Trump and Bezos, Leavitt refrained from commenting but strongly condemned Amazon’s move regarding tariff charges. The exchange reflects ongoing tensions in the political landscape as online retailers navigate the complexities of tariffs and consumer pricing.
