Fernando Lovo Reflects on New Role as UNM Athletics VP
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Fernando Lovo, the new Vice President and Director of Athletics at The University of New Mexico, has been on a whirlwind journey since taking office over 120 days ago. In a recent appearance on the New Mexico New Insiders Podcast, Lovo discussed the challenges and successes he has encountered, including hiring new head coaches for the university’s prominent football and men’s basketball programs—Jason Eck and Eric Olen, respectively.
Amidst managing UNM’s thrilling NCAA Tournament run into the Second Round, Lovo has also been actively promoting Lobo Athletics in Santa Fe. Adding to the excitement, he recently relocated his family—his wife, two young children, and a golden doodle—from Austin, Texas, to Albuquerque, a 16-hour trek.
During the podcast, Lovo shared his experiences and expressed his growing appreciation for New Mexican cuisine, revealing he prefers green chili but is warming up to red. Fans can catch the abbreviated interview on Fox New Mexico on April 30 at 10:30 p.m. MST, or access the full podcast on popular platforms and KRQE.com.
