Custom Lego Mobility Aid Enhances Comfort for Nova Scotia’s Wood Turtle
Halifax, Nova Scotia – April 28 (UPI) – Workers at the Museum of Natural History have ingeniously crafted a custom mobility aid for a resident wood turtle named Root, utilizing Lego pieces. Rescued in September from Shubenacadie Wildlife Park, Root has faced mobility challenges due to a missing front right foot, which had led to increased wear on his shell.
Heather McKinnon Ramshaw, the museum’s animal care specialist, observed that Root’s uneven gait caused him to drag his shell. “One leg is essentially shorter than the other one, so he was clunking his shell down,” Ramshaw explained. Concerned about potential damage to Root’s shell, staff sought a solution to help him walk more comfortably.
The inspiration for the innovative mobility aid came from a Lego exhibit at the museum. Tessa Biesterfeld, a naturalist interpreter, devised a homemade apparatus using a small dog harness, a Lego platform, and wheels to provide additional support for Root’s right side. “We know it’s non-toxic, we can replace parts as needed, and it’s modular,” Biesterfeld commented on the adaptability of the design.
Now, Root exhibits a newfound enthusiasm during outings. Biesterfeld noted that when she fastens his harness, he eagerly prepares for exploration: “When he hears that snap, he’s ready to go.”
This creative initiative not only improves Root’s comfort but showcases the museum’s commitment to animal care and innovation, making a significant difference in the life of this unique turtle.
