Community Collaboration Essential for Supporting Homeless Pregnant Women in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Addressing the challenges faced by pregnant women experiencing homelessness in Albuquerque requires a multifaceted approach, city workers with the Gateway emphasize. Following a tragic incident where a stillborn baby was found in a dumpster, the urgency for improved support is apparent.

Jennifer McDonald, a Gateway operations officer, highlighted the necessity of fostering trust with this vulnerable population and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts across various sectors. "It’s going to take a community to make sure that we put support services around our unhoused neighbors," she stated.

The Gateway offers specialized navigation services for women, enabling them to access healthcare and essential resources. Partner organizations such as Youth Development, Inc. and Milagro at UNM play a crucial role in bridging existing gaps.

Albuquerque Birthright also assists unhoused women, including those escaping domestic violence, by providing necessary resources for their babies. Director Cheryl Hallada noted the diverse challenges these women face, ranging from homelessness to immigration issues.

As the Albuquerque Police Department continues their investigation into the recent case, no charges have been filed against the mother. Community efforts remain vital in ensuring the well-being of struggling families in Albuquerque.
