NM State Baseball Falls to Arizona in 6-2 Road Loss
May 2, 2025 – Tucson, Ariz. – NM State’s baseball team struggled to maintain momentum in a 6-2 defeat against the Arizona Wildcats at Hi Corbett Field on Tuesday evening.
The game commenced uneventfully for both teams in the first inning, but the Wildcats struck first, scoring in the second. The Aggies responded in the third, capitalizing on a leadoff walk from Austin Corbett, who advanced to third on a stolen base and a throwing error. Tariq Freeny’s walk loaded the bases, and Steve Solorzano delivered an RBI single, leveling the score.
However, Arizona quickly regained control in the bottom of the third with two singles and a throwing error, reclaiming the lead and extending it with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. The Aggies showed resilience, but were unable to convert scoring opportunities, stranding runners in key situations. Arizona then added three more runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-RBI double, pushing the score to 6-1.
NM State managed to add a run in the seventh after Camden Kaufman’s single and a pickoff error, with Brandon Forrester driving in a run to narrow the gap to 6-2. The Aggies mounted a final threat in the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but Arizona’s bullpen extinguished the rally with a pop-out and a strikeout to seal the victory.
Notable performances included Tariq Freeny setting a season-high with four walks and Steve Solorzano extending his hitting streak to seven games. In his first start since March, Camden Kaufman also shone, adding to his season tally of multi-hit games.
Looking ahead, NM State prepares for a significant three-game series against Kennesaw State, slated to start Friday at 4 p.m. MT, as they aim to improve their standing in the CUSA Tournament. For more updates on NM State baseball, visit NMStateSports.com and follow their social media platforms.
