India Heightens Digital Restrictions Post-Pahalgam Terror Attack
In the wake of the shocking terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, India has intensified its diplomatic and digital actions against Pakistan. As of April 30, Instagram profiles of prominent Pakistani celebrities, including Hania Aamir and Mahira Khan, have been blocked for Indian users. This move aligns with the Indian government’s ongoing crackdown on content deemed provocative, as tensions between the two nations escalate.
The restriction affects several notable figures, including Ali Zafar, Sanam Saeed, and Bilal Abbas Khan, all of whom enjoy considerable popularity in India. This comes on the heels of the Indian government banning 16 Pakistani YouTube channels, such as Dawn News and Geo News, citing the dissemination of “provocative and communally sensitive content” as a primary reason.
Interestingly, not all Pakistani celebrities have been impacted; Fawad Khan and Atif Aslam remain accessible on Instagram. Fawad, who has a rich Bollywood history, and Atif Aslam, whose music continues to resonate in India, are exceptions in this wave of restrictions. Nevertheless, Fawad’s upcoming Bollywood film, Abir Gulaal, has been canceled, highlighting the widening divide.
These digital actions are part of a broader strategy that includes the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan and revocation of visas for Pakistani nationals in India. As the situation evolves, the future of these celebrity accounts and the general digital landscape remains uncertain amid increased governmental scrutiny.
