Senators Heinrich and Luján Critique Trump’s First 100 Days
U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján, both Democrats from New Mexico, have issued a scathing critique of President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in his second term. The Senators expressed deep concerns regarding the economic and social impact of Trump’s policies, particularly focusing on the initiatives associated with billionaire CEO Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
Senator Heinrich stated, "Donald Trump and Elon Musk are tanking our economy, pushing us into a recession, and throwing working families under the bus." He highlighted rising costs in health care, groceries, and utilities, attributed to Trump’s "chaotic" tariff imposition on global trade. Heinrich elaborated on numerous grievances, asserting that Trump’s administration has essentially burdened families with a $4,000 tax due to these tariffs and has taken actions detrimental to vital programs. He said, “In his first 100 days, Trump has attacked Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare; delayed veteran benefits; and undermined public education, all while scheming to sell off public lands.”
Senator Luján echoed similar sentiments, expressing that President Trump’s policies have increased financial strain on New Mexicans and jeopardized essential programs. "In just 100 days, President Trump has driven up costs for New Mexicans, attacked essential programs like Social Security, and put our nation’s public health at risk," he remarked. Luján noted that many constituents have voiced their alarm over the administration’s "reckless policies and hateful politics."
Both Senators emphasize that the American public is rejecting the rising costs and perceived chaos under Trump’s leadership, calling for a more stable and equitable approach to governance.
