Officer Killed in Pennsylvania Hospital Siege Struck by Friendly Fire, Prosecutor Reports

On February 22, West York Patrolman Andrew W. Duarte was killed while responding to a hostage situation at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania. A shotgun blast, fired by police during the chaos, struck both Duarte and the armed assailant, Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, who had taken hostages following his girlfriend’s death at the hospital. York County District Attorney Tim Barker described the incident as a “torrent of evil,” emphasizing that the officers exhibited heroic bravery by confronting gunfire to protect hostages.

The sequence of events began when Archangel-Ortiz, armed with a stolen gun, zip ties, and a knife, became agitated after a doctor informed him that his partner had died. He displayed his weapon, shot at a doctor, and threatened several hospital staff members while forcing them to zip tie others. Despite attempts at negotiation, the situation escalated rapidly. Police formed tactical teams and attempted to intervene.

In total, four hospital employees were injured, alongside two officers, with Duarte tragically losing his life from gunfire. His last act was to charge toward the danger, showcasing the commitment of law enforcement to safeguard lives. Barker later noted that an investigation did not reveal a clear motive for Archangel-Ortiz’s actions.

Survivors, including Nurse Tosha Trostle, recounted harrowing experiences, underscoring the growing violence against healthcare workers and the urgencies surrounding their safety. The incident has prompted renewed discussions about the risks healthcare professionals face and the systemic challenges in protecting them in high-stress environments.
