Press Release: "Rust" Premieres in New Mexico Amid Controversy
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexicans will get their first opportunity to see the film "Rust" on the big screen this weekend, although i t will not be shown anywhere in the metro area. Allen Theaters, a regional chain, will present "Rust" starting May 2 in locations such as Alamogordo, Farmington, Gallup, Las Cruces, and Roswell. For those unable to travel, the movie will also be available on streaming platforms like Apple TV and Prime Video.
The film gained notoriety due to the tragic shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was killed by a live bullet fired by actor Alec Baldwin during filming in October 2021. Following a trial, the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and is currently serving an 18-month sentence. In 2024, a judge dismissed charges against Baldwin, finding that evidence had been withheld.
Despite the controversy surrounding its production, Hutchins’ husband supported the decision to continue filming, becoming an executive producer. The film was ultimately completed in Montana, with cinematographer Bianca Cline striving to honor Hutchins’ artistic vision. "Rust" premiered at a film festival in Poland in 2024 to an enthusiastic reception.
