Aztecs Struggle in Late Stages of Series Opener Against New Mexico

Aztecs Suffer Heartbreaker in Extra Innings Against Lobos

SAN DIEGO – San Diego State University’s baseball team faced a crushing defeat on Friday as they lost 9-7 to New Mexico in a dramatic 10-inning outing at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The loss marked yet another late-game setback for the Aztecs.

SDSU held a 4-1 lead entering the ninth inning but failed to secure the victory as the Lobos rallied with five runs to take a 6-4 advantage. The Aztecs fought back, scoring two runs to tie the game at 6-6, prompting extra innings. However, New Mexico surged ahead in the 10th, scoring three more runs to lead 9-6.

Despite a valiant effort in the final frame, where the Aztecs loaded the bases with the potential winning run at first, they could not capitalize. SDSU’s pitching suffered late, with Aidan Russell taking the loss despite a solid start from Marko Sipila, who had just returned from injury.

Offensively, Jonathan Smith and CJ Moran each contributed two RBIs for the Aztecs, while Jordy Oriach led the Lobos with three RBIs. As the conference standings tighten, SDSU (15-32, 10-12 MW) now shares the fourth position with UNLV, while New Mexico improves to 26-18, tied for second with Nevada. The teams will meet again Saturday at 4 p.m. PT, with Omar Serrano taking the mound for SDSU.
