In Camden County, New Jersey, three bystanders, including two Army reservists, intervened heroically to save a woman during an attempted carjacking on a Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Jackson Road when 45-year-old Rondean McDonald crashed his vehicle into a wooded area. A 59-year-old woman stopped to assist him, only to become a target when McDonald forcibly entered her car and demanded she drive him. When she refused and attempted to call 911, McDonald seized her phone and violently attacked her, strangling her and causing visible injuries.
Witness Joseph Knazek observed the struggle, describing how the victim fought back even as McDonald wrestled with her and screamed for her to drive. Knazek intervened, trying to restrain McDonald’s wrists and free the woman from her seatbelt. Two Army reservists, one of whom is a Philadelphia police officer, also came to her aid upon witnessing the attack. One of the men used a fire extinguisher to shatter the driver’s side window, allowing them to pull McDonald out of the vehicle and hold him until police arrived.
The victim was taken to the hospital and reported to be in stable condition. Following the incident, McDonald was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including carjacking and driving under the influence. This incident highlights the bravery of the good Samaritans who risked their safety to protect another individual in distress.
