New Mexico State Police Officer Charged with DWI

Officer Arrested for DWI Following Crash in Rio Rancho

RIO RANCHO, N.M. — On May 2, at around 3:09 p.m., the Rio Rancho Police Department responded to reports of motor vehicle crashes at NMSR528 and Hwy. 550, where the driver fled the scene. A Sandoval County Sheriff’s deputy located the suspect’s vehicle, which had significant front-end damage, near Lincoln Avenue and Enchanted Hills Boulevard.

The driver, identified as Hugo Diaz Amaya, an officer with the New Mexico State Police, was arrested for leaving the scene, reckless driving, and driving while intoxicated (DWI). In response to the incident, NMSP Chief Troy Weisler expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that no one is exempt from the law, especially law enforcement personnel. He noted that officers are held to a higher standard due to the community’s trust.

Diaz-Amaya has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, and Weisler promised appropriate disciplinary action based on the findings. "His conduct does not reflect the values and integrity that define a New Mexico State Police officer," Weisler stated. This story is developing and will be updated as further information becomes available.
