NM State Track & Field Prepares for Final Regular Season Meet at Desert Heat Classic
Las Cruces, N.M. – May 1, 2023 – The New Mexico State Aggies track & field team is set to compete in their final regular season meet at the Desert Heat Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona on May 3. This will be the team’s second visit to Tucson this season, following their performance at the Willie Williams Classic in March.
The one-day event will feature competition from prominent programs including Oregon, Nebraska, and Iowa State, among others. The Aggies will participate in 18 events, showcasing a range of track and field disciplines such as the 100m, 400m hurdles, long jump, shot put, and hammer throw.
Several Aggies are currently ranked among the top contenders in Conference USA, with standout performances from Rachel O’Brien in the 1500m and 800m, and Alesha Lane in both shot put and discus. Notable performances include Andrew Gibby’s record-setting 3000m time, and Thomas Croshaw’s impressive 5000m finish, which ranks second in the conference.
Additionally, notable freshman Marlee Cavitt has managed a seamless transition from soccer to track, contributing significantly in both sports. She has made her mark in sprint events, helping the Aggies to impressive relay performances.
The meet marks an important stepping stone for the Aggies as they gear up for the CUSA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Middle Tennessee, starting May 16. Fans can follow the action live through links available on NMStateSports.com.
