Kim Shanahan: A Legacy of Sustainability in Santa Fe
Kim Shanahan, the former executive director of the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association and a dedicated advocate for sustainable building practices, passed away at 68 from a heart attack in Costa Rica. Known for his pioneering efforts in green building, he played a crucial role in developing Santa Fe’s green building code and championed affordable housing and water conservation well before these topics gained traction in the industry.
With a career spanning 35 years, Shanahan was recognized as a national expert in green building codes and was pivotal in creating the Water Efficiency Rating Score (WERS), which later became part of the National Green Building Standard as the Water Rating Index (WRI). His work extended beyond local initiatives; he influenced national standards and was a liaison for construction codes at the National Association of Home Builders.
Shanahan is remembered fondly by his peers for his deep commitment to community welfare. Many, including former colleagues and city officials, highlighted his mentorship and ability to tackle complex socio-political issues. His legacy as a passionate advocate for sustainability and equitable housing continues to inspire many in the Santa Fe community.
