Growing Worries Surround Head Start Programs for Children

Press Release: New Mexico’s Head Start Programs Remain Stable Amid Federal Concerns

By Leah Romero, Source New Mexico

Amid rising worries over potential federal efforts to dismantle the Head Start program, New Mexico officials report that the state’s services remain stable for now. This assurance comes as several Head Start providers and parent associations have taken legal action against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, claiming unlawful efforts to undermine the program which serves low-income families by preparing them for school.

The controversy escalated following reports that the Trump administration intends to eliminate Head Start, which has already faced significant funding cuts since the start of his second term. New Mexico’s Democratic Senators, Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján, joined forces with 40 other senators in a letter urging Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to unfreeze funding and address mass layoffs affecting key staff.

Luján, who credits his success to the Head Start program, emphasized the detrimental impact of nearly $1 billion in withheld federal grants—a 37% drop compared to the previous year. Concerns have been amplified by statements from the National Head Start Association, revealing widespread access issues for programs in 23 states.

Currently, New Mexico offers 2,233 Early Head Start slots and 5,457 Head Start slots, providing essential childcare and resources at no cost to families. Officials confirmed that these programs are accessing necessary funds without interruption, stressing the state’s commitment to supporting early childhood services during this uncertain time.

As developments continue, New Mexico remains vigilant in protecting the future of Head Start programs, crucial for aiding children and families in the state.
