Oscar-Winning Actor Gene Hackman Passes Away at 95

Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, famed for his role in the classic basketball film "Hoosiers," has died at the age of 95. Authorities discovered Hackman alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and their dog during a welfare check at their New Mexico home. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office reported that while foul play is not suspected, the precise cause of death remains under investigation.

Hackman, who portrayed coach Norman Dale in the 1986 film "Hoosiers," is celebrated for leading the fictional Hickory Huskers to a storied Indiana high school basketball championship. The film, directed by David Anspaugh, is often hailed as one of the greatest sports movies of all time, being recognized by the Associated Press as the best in 2020 and ranking fourth by the American Film Institute.

In addition to "Hoosiers," Hackman showcased his versatility by starring in "The Replacements," where he played coach Jimmy McGinty. His illustrious career spanned several decades, beginning in the 1960s and leading to his retirement in the early 2000s. Along with "Hoosiers," he has appeared in numerous iconic films, including Clint Eastwood’s "Unforgiven," Mel Brooks’ "Young Frankenstein," and Wes Anderson’s "The Royal Tenenbaums."

Over his career, Hackman received five Academy Award nominations, securing wins for his performances in "The French Connection" and "Unforgiven." His legacy as one of Hollywood’s most talented actors remains firmly intact, marking a significant loss for the film community and his fans worldwide.
