Professional Hockey Returns to New Mexico with ECHL Expansion Team
RIO RANCHO, N.M. — After nearly a 15-year hiatus, professional hockey is making a triumphant return to New Mexico. The ECHL has announced its plans to introduce a new expansion team in Rio Rancho starting in the 2026 season. Tentatively named the New Mexico Pro Hockey Club, this franchise will join the ECHL as its 31st member, serving as a vital link to the National Hockey League (NHL).
The team will host its home games at the Rio Rancho Events Center, a venue that previously showcased professional hockey with the New Mexico Scorpions and the junior team New Mexico Mustangs before both ceased operations. ECHL Commissioner Ryan Crelin emphasized the center’s readiness for professional play, citing its existing infrastructure and similarity to venues used by other successful teams.
The franchise will be owned by REV Entertainment, in partnership with the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball. Sean Decker from REV stated the organization will collaborate closely with the NHL’s Dallas Stars to improve operational aspects such as facilities, staffing, and player development, though the Stars will not serve as the official NHL affiliate.
Local hockey enthusiasts expressed their excitement over the announcement. Wayne Oliver, a former season-ticket holder for the Scorpions, shared his joy, stating, "This is great. This is awesome because my wife and I both love hockey."
A naming contest for the team is expected to take place this summer, with the chosen name announced later in the year. Additionally, coaching staff will be recruited in spring 2026 ahead of the inaugural season. This resurgence promises a new chapter for New Mexico sports and rekindles the region’s passion for hockey on the ice.
