New Mexico Girl Prepares for Collegiate Flag Football Journey

Albuquerque Academy Senior Secures Flag Football Scholarship at Mars Hill University

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Emanee Cerda, a senior at Albuquerque Academy, is set to showcase her flag football talents at Mars Hill University in North Carolina after receiving a scholarship. Growing up watching her brothers play, Emanee was drawn to football and joined a boys’ team in her freshman year, often taking on the running back position.

In a pivotal moment for her career, she participated in a women’s flag football showcase in Houston, Texas, where she was the only athlete from New Mexico. Despite initial apprehensions, Emanee found support among her peers and impressed coaches, garnering six official offers, including from Mars Hill University, where she ultimately chose to play.

Her journey highlights the growing popularity of flag football in New Mexico, especially with its inclusion in the upcoming 2028 Olympics. Emanee, who aims to play for the U.S. National Team, encourages young girls to embrace the sport. “I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” she said. “There are more girls’ teams forming, and it’s a fantastic experience." In 2024, she was also part of New Mexico’s inaugural flag football team, the ‘Twisted Sisters.’
