Aggies Gear Up for CUSA Championship Opener Against LA Tech
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The NM State Softball team is set to begin its Conference USA Championship journey, facing off against fourth-seeded LA Tech on Wednesday, May 7, at 2:30 p.m. CT. This four-day tournament marks a significant opportunity for the fifth-seeded Aggies (27-25, 14-13 CUSA) to pursue their first CUSA title and a coveted NCAA Regional appearance since 2018.
The matchup will take place at the WKU Softball Complex, where NM State holds a historical edge over LA Tech with a 21-16 record. The Aggies recently concluded their regular season on a high note, winning two out of three games against Kennesaw State, with standout performances including a thrilling 5-4 victory in 13 innings.
Heading into the tournament, Head Coach Kathy Rodolph emphasized the importance of maintaining solid defense and an aggressive offensive approach. "We just need to continue to play clean defense and keep attacking in the circle," she stated, highlighting the team’s newfound confidence and cohesion.
The tournament features a double-elimination format, with ten games scheduled over three days, culminating in a championship showdown on May 10. Each matchup will be streamed live via ESPN+, with the final on CBS Sports Network.
The Aggies will also celebrate the return of Associate Head Coach Cat Heifner, who has recently rejoined the team after battling cancer. Her presence has been pivotal, contributing to the team’s strong performance, including a notable increase in offensive production.
Among individual accolades, sophomore Desirae Spearman earned First-Team recognition in the All-CUSA postseason awards and is noted as a fifth-best two-way player nationally by Softball America.
