During a recent traffic stop in Ohio, officers discovered a raccoon named “Chewy” inside a vehicle holding a glass methamphetamine pipe in its mouth. The incident unfolded when police stopped the car, driven by 55-year-old Victoria Vidal from Akron, who had an active warrant and a suspended driver’s license. After arresting her, officers returned to the vehicle and found Chewy, leading to a surreal moment captured on body cam footage. The Springfield Township Police Department commented, humorously noting that discovering a raccoon with a meth pipe was a first for their officers.
Upon further inspection of the vehicle, authorities uncovered a significant amount of methamphetamine, crack cocaine, and several used meth pipes. Vidal was subsequently charged with three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and cited for driving under suspension. Additional charges for crack cocaine possession may follow pending lab results.
Vidal had the necessary paperwork to legally own the raccoon in Ohio, so Chewy was unharmed during the incident. Officers placed the raccoon in a carrier and contacted the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to arrange for its rehoming to a safer environment.
The Springfield Township Police expressed their ongoing commitment to public safety, emphasizing that their training prepares them for unexpected situations, even ones as unusual as a raccoon with a drug pipe. This bizarre encounter highlights both the challenges and unexpected moments faced by law enforcement while maintaining community safety.
